Is Your Skin Thirsty

If your skin feels tight, rough and looks flaky, doesn’t it make sense to slather on an oil-rich moisturizer? Not necessarily. First, you need to determine whether your skin is truly dry or simply dehydrated.
Dry skin doesn’t produce enough oils (lipids), whereas dehydrated skin lacks water or moisture. The cause of truly dry skin is genetic – it’s a skin “type.” Dehydration is a condition caused by outside factors. It’s important to understand the difference between the two because you can worsen your skin by using the wrong products.

Dry vs. Dehydrated
A personalised skincare routine is crucial for achieving radiantly healthy-looking skin. Did you know that anyone can suffer from dryness or dehydration, even those with oily or combination skin types   However, it can be difficult to distinguish the difference between the two and find the best way to treat specific skin needs. Here’s my handy guide:

The Difference
DRY
  • A skin type
  • Lacks oil on the surface of the skin
  • Can be caused by genetics

DEHYDRATED
  • A skin condition
  • Low water content within the skin
  • A skin type can be dehydrated due to external factors like air-conditioning
  • Also a result of poor diet, lack of water, weather and stress

What are the signs
DRY
  • Dullness, fine lines or cracks and uneven skin texture
  • Large areas of scaling and peeling
  • A feelness of tightness, especially after bathing or swimming
  • Increased inflammation and itchiness

DEHYDRATED
  • Itching, tightness and increased irritation
  • Roughness, uneven skin texture, and flaking
  • Excess sebum and blemishes – dead skin cells can clog pores, forming a blemish when the excess oil produced to counteract dehydration is unable to escape.

What can I do to help?
DRY
  • Decrease bathing frequency and temperature
  • Include healthy fats in your diet and ensure your water intake is high enough.
  • Invest in a humidifier for your room to help reduce irritation, especially at night
  • Select an Arbonne moisturiser that suits your skin type.

DEHYDRATED
  • Increase daily water consumption
  • Nourish from within by maintaining a healthy and balanced diet
  • Apply moisturiser whilst the skin is still damp after bathing
  • Select an moisturiser that suits your skin type
