Often we think that for beautiful skin we need to reach for expensive creams and potions - but as a skin expert I know that its really important to look at the foods that you are eating too. What you put inside your body will affect how your skin looks and how your body functions. So lets start with the Grapefruit.
With its distinct flavour, the powerful taste of grapefruit is not for everyone. But with its high nutritional content and refreshing scent, more and more people are touting the ingredient as a skin-care secret. But what is it about the fruit that benefits the skin?
Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, grapefruit extract applied topically can provide an array of anti-aging benefits like evening skin tone and fighting off free radicals. When eaten, it provides the body with important nutrients essential for healthy skin.
Internally, grapefruit is a great example of a fruit that is loaded with skin-protective antioxidants and also has a high water content, which helps keep your skin’s barrier (the outer layer) hydrated and more resistant to wrinkle-causing free-radical damage from the sun and daily pollution. A great benefit of grapefruit is that it promotes the production of collagen, thus making the skin more plump and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, keeping the skin looking younger and more supple - whats not to love?
Grapefruit also has excellent astringent and exfoliating properties that are perfect for oily or acne-prone skin. It also increases the pH of the skin, which may reduce acne. But when it comes to those suffering from rosacea, citrus may not be the answer. Certain citrusy fruits such as grapefruit may irritate the condition. It’s important to identify the foods that affect you by tracking what you eat and evaluate how your skin reacts during the few hours after consumption.
Grapefruit is rich in vitamin C and also contains the phytonutrients lycopene, which is a known cancer-fighting chemical (particularly prostate, lung and stomach cancers), and Bioflavonoids which help to promote skin health. The good news is grapefruit juice provides the same benefits as eating grapefruit itself.
So, the grapefruit can promote healthy skin because it is rich in vitamin C, which is necessary for collagen production in the skin. Of the citrus fruits, grapefruit has the highest concentration of vitamin C. Grapefruit also has the highest concentration of lycopene, a phytochemical which is also found in tomatoes. Lycopene reduces the effects of free radicals, which can cause cancer. Grapefruit also has a phytochemical known as naringin. Naringin reduces toxins in the liver, which results in healthier skin.
Because naringin can help the liver to work better you must be very careful using and eating grapefruit if you take prescription medication. There are several drugs that can have life-threatening consequences when combined with even the smallest hint of grapefruit. So before adding grapefruit to your diet, if on medication please contact you doctor or nutritionist to check that its ok.
Grapefruit in Skin Creams
Creams made from grapefruit extract can help with skin disorders. Many people have skin conditions such as dandruff, acne, impetigo and rashes. Grapefruit extracts in creams can help remedy these problems. Dandruff and psoriasis are caused by inflammation in the skin. Grapefruit drops can alleviate inflammation of the skin. Grapefruit extracts increase the pH of the skin, which may reduce acne. Grapefruit extract can help reduce rash eruptions caused by impetigo too.
Add Grapefruit to Your Diet
There are many ways to help your skin by incorporating grapefruit into your diet. Instead of drinking orange juice in the morning, drink grapefruit juice. Add grapefruit slices to salads. Squeeze grapefruit juice into sauces to give a tangy taste.
Avocado and Grapefruit Salad
The avocado starts to melt pretty quickly into the salad, so be sure to add the avocado right before serving for the best presentation. It's best to eat this on the same day that you prepared it.
